En 1943, Fritz Lang n’a pas tourné depuis 2 ans. Il n’est plus en contrat avec la 20th Century-Fox et ne trouve pas de nouveau sujet. L’annonce de l’assassinat de Reinhard Heydrich, le Reichsprotektor de Tchécoslovaquie, lui donne soudain l’élan pour un nouveau projet. Ce sera Hangmen Also Die (Les bourreaux meurent aussi), film haletant sur la résistance tchèque, dont la fabrication a aussi été un combat, entre les exigences de la dramaturgie hollywoodienne et les nécessaires intentions politiques, dont Bertolt Brecht, qui a participé au scénario, était un farouche partisan. Mais à l’arrivée, c’est le cinéma qui gagne.

In 1943, Fritz Lang had not shot any film for two years. His contract with the 20th Century-Fox was over and he could not find any subject for a new film plot. The murder of Reinhard Heydrich, the Reichsprotektor of Czecoslovakia gave him a new momentum for a new project. The result was Hangmen Also Die, a breathtaking film about the Czech resistance. The making of the film was also a fight between Hollywood demands regarding the actual drama and the necessary political intentions, of which Bertolt Brecht, who participated in the script writing, was a fierce advocate. At the end, it is a victory for cinema.
