Prix du 10e Festival du Cinéma Européen en Essonne à Ken Loach pour l’ensemble de son oeuvre en sa présence le vendredi 10 octobre à 20h (Les Ulis).
Ken Loach a suivi des études de droit au St Peter's College à Oxford. Il commence comme acteur dans le théâtre de Répertoire.
Au début des années 60, il entre dans le monde de la télévision et tourne des docu-dramas, notamment Cathy Come Home (1966). Vers la fin des années 60, il commence à diriger des films, et réalise Kes. Au cours des années 70 et 80 ses films
connaissent alors une censure politique. Son film The Save the Children Fund Film est une commande de la fondation Save the
Children, qui tente de faire détruire le négatif… S'il s'essaie au film en costumes avec Black Jack (1978), Ken Loach se consacre
essentiellement au petit écran durant les années 70. On lui doit notamment Days of hope, une série-fleuve sur la classe
ouvrière. Avec la chronique Regards et Sourires (1981), il entre pour la première fois dans la course à la Palme d'or. Lucide et
engagé, Ken Loach porte un regard chaleureux sur les laissés-pour-compte de l'Angleterre thatchérienne avec des oeuvres
comme Riff Raff (1990) ou Raining Stones. Mais c’est avec Land and Freedom (1995) que Ken Loach rencontre un large succès
qui le fait connaître du grand public. Sélectionné au Festival du cinéma européen en Essonne 2001, The Navigators remporte
le Grand Prix. En 2006, Ken Loach gagne la Palme d'Or au festival de Cannes pour son film Le vent se lève.
Ken Loach studied Law at St Peter's College in Oxford. He started as an actor in a repertory theatre company. At the beginning
of the 60’s, he worked for television producing a series of docudramas, notably Cathy Come Home (1966). At the end of the 60’s,
he made his feature debut and produced Kes. The 70’s and 80’s were marked by political censorship. His film, The Save the
Children Fund Film was commissioned by the Save The Children Foundation, which attempted to have the negative destroyed.
Although he made a costume drama, Black Jack (1978), Ken Loach mainly worked for television during the 70’s, producing Days
of hope, a mini-series about the working class. With Looks and Smiles (1981), he entered for the first time the competition for
the Palme d’Or. Lucid and committed, Ken Loach looks compassionately at the dispossessed of the Thatcherian Britain in films
such as Riff Raff (1990) and Raining Stones. It is however with Land and Freedom (1995) that Ken Loach met a large success
and became well known by a large public. Nominated at the European Film Festival in Essonne,The Navigators won the Grand
Prix. In 2006, Ken Loach won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his film The Wind That Shakes the Barley.
