Synopsis

An evocation of the life of Benedictine  Hildegarde von Bingen, a major feminist figure of the Middle Ages.

Margarethe Von Trotta

Born in 1942 in Berlin, she discovered her passion for cinema in the Quartier Latin theatres. She was a theatre actress but crossing the road of young German filmmakers marked a turning point in her career. Margarethe Von Trotta played mainly for Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff, developing with him a long and fruitful collaboration. After having worked as a scriptwriter and co-director for him, she decided to make her own films. She was painfully marked by the history of her country and made engaged films involving mainly female characters with powerful and unsubmisssive personalities, such as Katarina Blum, Rosa Luxemburg, Hildegard von Blingen and more recently Hannah Arendt. She regularly works with actress Barbara Sukowa and has just finished shooting a film with her. Margarethe Von Trotta won many prizes, including the Golden Lion in Venice for Marianne and Julianne
